Biological explanation Flashcards

1
Q

What does the genetic explanation suggest?

A

As we inheret 50% of our genes from each parent, we may inheret faulty gene codings for certain areas of the brain from a parent. If we do so, due to the brain being the cause of all mental states, our mental states will be faulty. We will pass it down to our children too.

Q

What is the liability threshold model?

A

Most geneticists believe there are a number of genes which increase the risk of schizophrenia. The more of these genes we have the more at risk we are of developing schizophrenia.

Q

What is the dopamine hypothesis?

A

Dopamine is involved in the limbic system, which is involved in regulating emotions. Disturbances in this system may lead to agitation seen in patients.
Dopamine is also found in the Basal Ganglia which regulates movement and emotions. Abnormal levels might explain the onset of paranoia and hallucinations.

Q

What three things could cause abnormal dopamine activity?

A

Super-sensitivity of dopamine receptors.
Excess of dopamine receptors.
Increased synthesis and release of dopamine from the pre-synaptic neuron.

Q

What does the diathesis stress model suggest in regards to the the biological approach?

A

Our biology predisposes us towards developing schizophrenia, but as Wahlberg found, it may be that a disturbed family is what causes the onset itself. A healthy family does not lead to onset.
