Biological Bases Lecture 1 Flashcards
What is a neuron
Nerve cells that send and receive electrical impulses to and from the brain and nervous system
What are the processes neurons are involved in?
Reception, integration and transmission
What are gila cells and their functions
Glia cells support the neurons and play a role in information processing.
How do neurons communicate which each other
Neurons communicate with neurotransmitters–one way process–chemical message travels from axons to new terminals–from terminals it crosses over the synaptic cleft before the receptors on the post synaptic neuron.
What causes an action potential
Sodium Gates open, causing the cell membrane to have a more positive voltage. This causes depolarisation
How does an action potential occur in a neuron
All or nothing
What is hyoerpolarization
When the sodium Gates close and the potassium gates open (voltage gates). Causes the voltage of the membrane to become more negative. During the refractory period the voltage is lower than resti g potential and no new action potentials can occur.
What causes the excitory or inhibitiry effect on the post synaptic neuron
The action potential causes the relates of neurotransmitters that are either excitory or inhibitory or can be both.
