Biological Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is the biological approach?
The influence of genes, biological structures and neurochemistry on behaviour.
What is the real world application for the biological approach?
Drug therapy correct imbalance of neurotransmitters in the brain, SSRI’S increase serotonin levels in the brain for OCD.
What is biological reductionism?
All behaviour is due to neurochemical, physiological, evolutionary and or genetic influences.
What are the research methods for the biological approach?
Brain scans.
Strength of brain scans
These are accurate, non biased measure of brain chemistry. They are less susceptible to misinterpretation and mor objective.
What is evolution
Natural selection that ensures a species’ characteristics which provide a survival advantage are passed between generations.
Evolution with the biological approach
Buss- Heterosexual mate selection. Men prefer looks, youth, and chastity, while women prefer financial prospects and dependability.
What is a genotype
Genetic makeup fixed at birth (skin colour)
What are the four brain structures
Frontal, Temporal, Occipital and Parietal
What is a phenotype
Phenotype- environmentally influenced genes (skin tone from UV)
What is the causation issue with biological approach findings?
OCD and low serotonin. Cannot explain cause of human behaviour.
What is biological determinism?
Genetics, neurochemistry and brain structure, for example control us and inherited mental illness
