Biological Flashcards
What is the biological approach?
The influence of genes, biological structures and neurochemistry on behaviour.
What is the real world application for the biological approach?
Drug therapy is used to correct imbalances or neurotransmitters in the brain, for example, SSRI’S increase serotonin levels in the brain for OCD.
Improves the quality of life, and economy and is therefore useful in society
What is biological reductionism?
All behaviour can be explained by can be explained by neurochemical, physiological, evolutionary and or genetic influences.
What are the research methods for the biological approach?
Usage of methodology, such as brain scans. These are accurate, non biased measure of brain chemistry. They are less susceptible to misinterpretation and mor objective.
Evolution with the biological approach
The process of natural selection that ensures a species’ characteristics which provide a survival advantage are passed between generations.
Buss (1994)- Heterosexual mate selection. Men prefer looks, youth, and chastity, while women prefer financial prospects and dependability.
What are the four brain structures
Frontal, Temporal, Occipital and Parietal
Genes
Genotype- Genetic makeup fixed at birth (skin colour)
Phenotype- environmentally influenced genes (skin tone from UV)
Monozygotic twins share 100% of DNA, dizygotic twins share 50% of DNA
What is the issue with biological approach findings?
Causation is claimed when only association exists, OCD and low serotonin. Cannot explain cause of human behaviour.
What is biological determinism?
behaviour is caused by internal factors such as genetics, neurochemistry and brain structure, for example, people have no free will to overcome inherited mental illness.
