Biogeography and Ecosystems Flashcards
What are the horizons of the soil
OAEBC
Organic, Mineral, Eluvial, Illuvial C (initial layer)
What is pedogenesis?
The process by which soils are formed
What is the Biosphere?
The biologically inhabited part of the earth
What is pedogenesis affected by?
Weathering, Oxidation, Humans
What are the three types of erosion?
Rill erosion = water runoff erosion
Gully erosion = Hole in the ground from the erosion
Exposure to humans and animals
What causes soil acidification?
an overpowering amount of H+ in the soil
What is Biogeography?
The reason why plants and animals are where they are in space.
What is a Eurytopic species?
A species that has a wide tolerane - KIWI
What is a Stenotopic species?
A species that has a small range
What is an ecosystem?
The Biotic and Abiotic components in an environment
What is a Natural Resource?
Anything that has been created through Natural Processes that people use and value.
What are externalities?
Spil over effects of things eg. gum in town
What is the Tragedy of commons?
The interaction between the environment, society and the economy
What role does Nitrogen play in the biochemical cycle?
It produces RNA, DNA and aids in the growth of plants and animals
What role does Phosphorous play in the biochemical cycle?
It helps in energy-releasing reactions
What role does Potassium play in the biochemical cycle?
It is an enzyme, it regulates stomata density
What is a biochemical cycle?
The movement of chemicals and nutrients between abiotic and biotic phases
What is virtual water?
Water that goes into resources
What are biogeochemical cycles?
Recycling processes that supply essential substances to the biosphere
What is the water budget of a system?
Accounting for all of the inflow and outflow of water in a given system over time.
What is the O horizon composed of?
Organic material
What is the A horizon composed of?
Nutrients that support plant life
What is the B horizon composed of?
Clay materials
What is the C horizon composed of?
Weathered parent materials
What is desertification?
The process that causes the soil to become more desert like as a result of human interaction.
What is the meaning of biomagnificaiton?
You are what you eat
What are the only renewable resources that we cant deplete?
Solar energy, wind PPT
What is a subsuitable item?
Another resource has been replaced by an outdated resource.
Where does a boreal forest thrive?
In the cold
