Bioenergetics Flashcards
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
carbon dioxide + water–> glucose + oxygen
Where does photosynthesis take place?
Within the chloroplasts due to the presence of the chemical chlorophyll
What factors limit photosynthesis?
- Light intensity; too little
- Carbon dioxide; too little
- temperature; too great or little
How can glucose be used?
- Energy; respiration
- Storage; starch, fat or oil
- Cellulose; plant growth/strengthening
- Amino acids; protein synthesis
How do plants produce proteins?
Synthesised from nitrate ions absorbed from the soil
What is anaerobic respiration?
The production of energy without oxygen
What is airobic respiration?
The production of energy with oxygen
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration?
Glucose –> lactic acid
What is the equation for airobic respiration?
Glucose+oxygen –> carbon dioxide+water
What form of respiration produces the most energy?
Airobic
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration in yeast?
Glucose –> ethanol+carbon dioxide
What are the uses for and the name of anaerobic respiration in yeast?
Fermentation; produce bread or alchol
What does prolonged exercise cause in the human body?
Oxygen debt and lactic acid build up
What is the body’s response to prolonged exercise?
Carry lactic acid to the liver and react it with oxygen to remove it from the cells. The oxygen required is caused oxygen debt.
What is the metabolism?
The sum of all chemical reactions in a cell or body
