Bioenergetics Flashcards
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
carbon dioxide + water ———) glucose + oxygen
Is photosynthesis an endothermic or exothermic reaction?
Endo thermic, this means energy is transferred from the environment in the process.
Does photosynthesis require energy to change carbonate oxide and water into glucose and oxygen?
Yes
Where does photosynthesis take place?
in chloroplasts in green plant cells. They contain pigments like chlorophyll that absorbs light.
What five main things do plants need glucose for?
Respiration, making cellulose, making amino acids, stored as oils and fats, and stored as starch.
Name three limiting factors of photosynthesis?
Light, temperature, and CO2
How can chlorophyll be a limiting factor of photosynthesis?
Amount of coffee in a plant can be affected by disease or environmental stress, these factors can cause chloroplasts to become damaged or not make enough chlorophyll Reducing the amount of photosynthesis.
How can pond be used to measure the effect of light intensity on the rate of photosynthesis?
3 to which the pond weed produces oxygen corresponds to the rate at which is photosynthesising.
How can you use pondweed to measure the effect of light on a rate of photosynthesis?
source of white light is placed at a specific distance from the pond weed. Pommard is left to photosynthesise for settlement of time, as it does this the oxygen will be released and collected in the capillary tube. At the end of the experiment the syringe is used to draw the gas bubbles in the tube alongside the ruler and the length of the bubbles is measured. This is proportional to the volume of O2 produced. Repeat the experiment twice while moving the light source a different distances.
inverse square law shows that light intensity decreases in proportion to the square root distance give an example.
if you have the distance, the light intensity before time is greater.
How do use inverse square law to calculate the light intensity?
Use the formula 1/d2
What is respiration?
The process of transferring energy from glucose, which goes into every cell.
Is respiration exothermic or endothermic?
Exothermic, transfers energy to the environment
What is metabolism?
All the chemical reactions in an organism.
What is aerobic respiration?
Respiration requires oxygen. It’s the most efficient way to transfer energy from glucose.
