Bioenergetics Flashcards
What’s the word equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide + water -> glucose + oxygen
First way glucose is used
For respiration - transfers energy from glucose which enables the plants to convert the rest of the glucose into various other useful substances
Second way glucose is used
Making cellulose - glucose is converted to cellulose to make strong cell walls
Third way glucose is used
Making amino acids - glucose is combined with nitrate ions (absorbed from soil) to make amino acids , which are then made into proteins
Fourth way glucose is used
Stored as oils or fats - glucose is turned into lipids for storing in seeds
Fifth way glucose is used
Stored as starch - glucose is turned into starch and stored to be ready to use when photosynthesis isn’t happening. Starch is better at storing than glucose
Three limiting factors of photosynthesis:
Light intensity, concentration of carbon dioxide, and temperature
How does carbon dioxide affect photosynthesis?
Too little carbon dioxide slows it down as it’s one of the raw materials needed for photosynthesis. The amount of carbon dioxide will only increase the rate of photosynthesis up to a certain point
How do greenhouses help farming?
They create the ideal environment for plants to grow in as they trap heat, carbon dioxide levels can be increased with a paraffin heater, and artificial light can be supplied.
Greenhouses also keep them free from pests and diseases
What is metabolism?
The sum of all reactions that happen in a cell or the body
