Bioenergetics Flashcards
What kind of reaction is photosynthesis?
Endothermic.
Describe the process of photosynthesis.
Chloroplasts contain a molecule called chlorophyll which traps the energy transferred by light.
This energy allows glucose and oxygen to be produced.
What is the symbol equation for photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6H2O —> C6H12O6 + 6O2
What are the factors that affect the rate of photosynthesis?
Light intensity
Temperature
Carbon dioxide concentration
Amount of chlorophyll
What is the inverse square law?
L = 1 / d2
Required Practical 5: Light intensity’s effect on photosynthesis of pondweed
What are the uses of glucose?
- Respiration to release energy
- Producing fat or oil molecules for storage in seeds
- Into insoluble starch for storage in the stem, leaves or roots.
- To produce cellulose
- To produce amino acids for protein synthesis (nitrate ions also needed)
Why is starch a good storage molecule?
The molecule contains large amounts of glucose
It is insoluble so stays in cells / she’s not affect osmosis
Why will a growing seedling use its store of lipids (fats and oils)?
Lipids can be broken down to release glucose which can be used in respiration, making new proteins or to make new cell walls.
What does glucose from respiration get used for?
Movement, to keep warm and for chemical reactions.
Where does aerobic respiration take place?
In the mitochondria of cells.
Waft is different about anaerobic respiration?
It is without oxygen do the glucose is not completely broken down so less energy is transferred.
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration in animals?
Glucose —> lactic acid
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration in plant and yeast cells?
Glucose —> ethanol + carbon dioxide
Why does protein synthesis in plants require both photosynthesis and respiration?
Photosynthesis produces glucose molecules that are used to produce amino acids. This glucose is also used in respiration. Respiration provides the energy required for protein synthesis.
