BIODIVERSITY - Viruses Flashcards
What is a virus?
A nucleoprotein complex that replicates only inside the living cells of an organism.
What does Obligate Intercellular parasite mean?
It requires host to survive and lives inside of host’s body.
What is a bacteriophage?
Virus that only affects bacteria.
Are viruses capable of living independently?
No they are functionally dependent.
When viruses are outside of cells what are they?
Outside of cells viruses are dormant.
What organelles do viruses NOT have?
Cytoplasm, membrane bound organelles, or cell membranes.
What type of genetic material can be found in a virus?
There is nucleic acid. This can either be RNA or DNA. It can be single or double stranded, linear or circular. However it can only have one.
What structure does the virus HIV have?
It has a spherical shape.
What structure does the tobacco mosaic virus have?
It has a cylindrical shape.
What shape does the polio virus have?
20 crystallized sides
What is a prion?
Infectious particles that cause damage to nerve cells in the brain. They are proteins that lack DNA or RNA.

Name a prion causing brain disease found in humans?
Creutzfeldt - Jakob disease (CJD)
What is the definition of lytic?
To cut or to break open something.
What is the difference between the lytic and lysogenic cycle?
The lytic cycle breaks down the hosts chromosome, whereas in the lysogenic cycle the virus’s DNA integrates into the hosts chromosome.
