biodiversity: bacteria, protista, animals Flashcards
autotrophic and heterotrophic organisms
auto- plants
heter- anumals
protista’s role in evolution of living organisms
gave rise to fungi plant and animal kingdoms
division of time
- the largest blocks of time are eras.
- Eras are divided into blocks of time called periods
- some periods are divided into epochs, which can be divided into ages
Endothermic: mammals and birds
Body temperatures is regulated by metabolism
Ectothermic: most animals
Body temperatures are regulated by the environment
Five key characteristics for land life
reptiles
- legs (majority)
- lungs & pulmonary veins
- cutaneous respiration
- partially divided heart
- amphibians must reproduce in water
Bony vs. Sharks
sharks: flexible skeleton made of cartilage, even teeth
- gain buoyancy by metabolizing oil in their huge livers, must keep swimming to counteract their denser-than-water bodies
bony:
- a swim bladder,
a gas-filled sac regulates buoyancy
- breathe by a single loop blood circulation: gills exact dissolved oxygen
