Biodiversity and Classification Flashcards
Polymorphism
A locus that has two or more alleles
Climate change
A significant long term change to an area’s climate, like temperature or rain fall.
Ecosystem
All the organisms living in an area and all the non living conditions. Organisms in an ecosystem are interdependent as they depend on one another to survive.
Keystone species
Many other species depend and without which the ecosystem would change dramatically.
May be predators, to keep the population in check. E.g. wolf prey on elk
Modifiers- maintaining the environment needed for the ecosystem e.g. beavers building dams
Or hosts like palm trees
Endangered species
Species which are at risk of extinction because of a low population or threatened habitat.
Classification
The act of arranging organisms into groups based upon their similarities and differences.
Taxonomy
The study of classification
Prokaryotae
bacteria
prokaryotic, unicellular, no nucleus
less than 5 micro meters
Protoctista
Algae
Eukaryoti, usually live in water, single celled or simple multicellular organism
Fungi
Yeasts and mushroom
Eukaryotic, chitin cell wall
Saprotrophic (absorb substances from dead or decaying organisms)
Plantae
Mosses
eukaryotic, multicellular, cell walls, photosynthesise
Autotrophic (produce own food)
Animalia
Mammals fish
eukaryotic, multicellular, no cell walls
heterotrophic (consume plants and animals)
