Conservation Flashcards
Ecological reasons to maintain biodiversity
Protecting species as organisms in an ecosystem are interdependent of one another. The protection of keystone species (many species in an ecosystem depend on and if werent present would change the ecosystem dramatically). disruption of food chains and nurtient cycles.
Genetic resources eg clothing and drugs and fuels
Economic reasons to maintain biodiversity
Reducing soil depletion
Monoculture is the growing of a single variety of crop. Continuous monoculture causes soil depletion because the nutrients are gradually used up. The economic costs include increased spending on fertilisers and decreased yields.
Aesthetic
Attractive landscapes where people can enjoy
In Situ conservation
Conservation is the protection and management of species and habitats.
In situ means protecting species in there natural habitat.
Establishing protected areas such as marine conservation zones and wildlife reserves.
Controlling or preventing introduction of species which threaten local biodiversity.
Protection of habitats eg coppicing.
Restoring damaged areas.
Legal protection to endangered species.
ADV
larger populations can be protected
less disruptive
chances of recovering are greater
difficult to control poachers or predators or disease
Ex Situ
Conservation off site.
Seed banks, botanic gardens and zoos.
Relocating to a safer area
breeding in captivity and reintroducing into the wild
Breeding programmes
ADV
Predtation and hunting can be controlled
health check individuals and treat them for disease.
IVF
DISADV only a small number can be cared for expensive to create and sustain an environment catch human disease wont exhibit natural behaviours
Rio Convention of Biological Diversity
aims to develop international strategies on the conservation of biodiversity and how to use animal and plant resources in a sustainable way.
Shared knowledge of scientific research
Shared access to genetic resources
Convention on the international trade on endangered species
illegal to kill endangered species
illegal to trade products from endangered species
education
stop the trade of wild plants for commercial purposes
regulate and monitor trade of species
Countryside Stewardship Scheme
Encourages farmers and landowners to manage their property in a way that benefits the environment.
Planting hedgerows and trees to provide habitats for birds and insects.
