Biodiversity Flashcards
What is the definition of Biodiversity?
The variety of living organisms in an area
What is Habitat diversity?
The number of habitats in an area
What is species diversity?
The number of different species and the abundance of each species in an area
Name the 5 Kingdoms
- Prokaryotae
- Protoctista
- Fungi
- Plantae
- Animalia
Name the 3 domains
- Bacteria
- Archaea
- Eukaryote
Why are Random samples taken?
To avoid bias
Outline how to do random sampling
- Take samples at regular distances
- Use random numbers for coordinates
- May include infrequent species
- Record odd plants, but don’t use in statistical analysis
What problems may come from trying to sample animals?
- May disturb environment
- Give inaccurate results
What is species richness
Number of different species present in a habitat
What is species evenness?
Number of individuals in each species, relative abundance of species
What does a high index of biodiversity indicate?
- Many species present in habitat
- Stable habitat
What does a low index of biodiversity indicate?
- Few species present
- unstable habitat
- A small change would have large impact on habitat/species/ecosystem
What is genetic diversity?
Number of all variations at a locus in a population/species
Genetic diversity =
Number of polymorphic gene loci
————————————————— x 100 (%)
Total number of loci
Name the 6 factors affecting biodiversity
- Hunting for food
- Overharvesting
- Killing for protection/to remove competition
- Pollution and habitat destruction
- Population growth
- Introduction of new flora and fauna
