3
Q

Indication of high index of biodiversity and how it affects the survival of the ecosystem/community.

A

The community/ecosystem has many different species and they will be able to withstand environmental changes better compared to communities and ecosystems with low index of biodiversity.

4
Q

How to measure biodiversity? Define each.

A

Species Richness and Species Evenness

Species Richness
-Qualitative
-Answers the question “How many different species can I see?”

Species Evenness
-Quantitative
-Answers the question “How much of each different species can I see?”
-Can further be measured by: percentage cover, species frequency, and population density

7
Q

Explain the levels of biodiversity.

A

GENETIC, SPECIES, AND ECOSYSTEM

Genetic diversity - refers to the variation of genes due to the differences in nitrogenous sequences within a particular species.

Species diversity - variation of species as well as their abundance within the particular community/ecosystem.

Ecosystem diversity - variation of different communities and their association with their chemical and physical environment.

Q

explain each of the ecosystem diversity biomes

A

Aquatic
-freshwater
-marine

Grasslands (differs in temperature and pre-dominant types of plants are shrubs)
-tropical (aka savannas - close to equator)
-temperate (up/down a few levels from the equator)

Forests
-tropical
-temperate
-boreal (aka taigas - Russia, Canada, Alaska)

Desert (judged based on the precipitation it receives annually)
-hot
-cold (the largest desert is Antarctica)

Tundra (Least Biodiverse Biomes as they are dry biomes covered in snow)
-arctic
-alpine

examples of acts of deforestation

A

-kaingin farming
-illegal logging
-forest fires
-typhoons
-conversion of agricultural land for housing projects

17
Q

Define eutrophication.

A

When concentrations of organic nutrients from domestic garbage are thrown into bodies of water.

18
Q

What’s PCB?

A

Polychlorinated Biphenyl

Toxic wastes produced from the production of inks, paints, and electrical insulators.

19
Q

Define biological magnification.

A

2 explanations:
-increase in concentration of pollutants in the food chain
-buildup of pollutants in organisms at higher trophic levels in a food chain.

20
Q

Define biological accumulation.

A

-increase in concentration of pollutants

21
Q

What is Simpson’s Index of Biodiversity?

A

-qualifies the biodiversity of a habitat
-presents biodiversity as a numerical value
-takes into account both species evenness and species richness
-values range from 0-1

22

What does IUCN stand for?

A

International Union for Conversation of Nature
