Biochemistry - Hyperphosphataemia Flashcards
1
Q
most phosphate is locked up where?
A
in the bones alongside calcium as Hydroxyapatite
2
Q
Role of parathyroid hormone?
A
When serum calcium lowers it increases. It then stimulates osteoclasts to break down bone and frees up calcium and phosphate ions from the bone.
3
Q
parathyroid hormone impact on kidney?
A
Proximal convoluted tubule = phosphate reabsorption is blocked
Distal convoluted tubule = increases calcium reabsorption
SO calcium levels rise and phosphate levels decrease in blood.
