Biochemistry Flashcards
What is sensitivity?
the ability of a test to identify a disease
What is specificity?
a measure of how good the test is at identifying health
What is the positive predictive value?
the percentage of people who have a positive test and who have the disease
What is the negative predictive value?
the percentage of people who have a negative test and don’t have the disease
What is prevalence?
the percentage of the population with the disease
What is the most important buffering equation?
H+ + HCO3- < - > H2CO3 < - > CO2 + H2O
What is the respiratory component of the equation?
pCO2
What is the metabolic component of the equation?
HCO3-
What is acidosis?
increase in H+ concentration
What is alkalosis?
decrease in H+ concentration
What is academia?
increased [H+]
What is alkalaemia?
decreased [H+]
What happens in response to too much H+?
the body will blow off CO2
What happens in response to too much CO2?
the kidneys will compensate by getting rid of H+
What are the causes of respiratory acidosis?
- choking
- bronchopneumonia
- COPD
