Biochemistry Flashcards
What is UREA?
A nitrogenous waste product produced by liver excreted by kidney
What is BUN ?
Expresses the amount of nitrogen atoms in blood incorporated into Urea
What is Creatine?
For med from Creatine in muscles
What are the normal ranges for Creatine?
40 - 130 umol cat and dog
Increased Creatine levels can cause what?
Muscle trauma
Muscle disorders
Vitamin E / Selenium deficiency
Heart disease
What is Haematology?
Determines number and type of blood cells in a sample
Two Types of anticoagulant ?
EDTA - Best for routine Haematology combines with calcium and clots
Oxolate - Not as good as EDTA
What is Microhaematocrit ?
Method of rapid determination of PCV by centrifuging blood capillary tubes
What are the normal PCV ranges for a cat and dog?
Dog - 37 - 55 %
Cat - 24 - 45 %
What is Urinalysis?
Urine sample collected in universal containers - sample should be collected in the morning will be more concentrated
Sample should be tested within one hour and warmed to room temp
Explain Viral Replication?
- Viron attaches to host cell membrane at receptor sites
- Bacterial cell wall is softened by Lysosyme from tail plate - tail contracts virus enters cell
-
What is biochemistry?
Measures the levels of a substance eg- Glucose or calcium within a sample
