Bio4 Flashcards
What are platelets
They are fragments of a cell with no nucleus
They help form clots at a cut or wound
What do arteries do
They carry blood away from the heart
What is the function of veins
They carry the blood toward the heart
What are capillaries and what do they do
The smallest blood vessels they supply blood to the body’s tissues and organs
Name 3 properties for arteries
The have thick walls containing elastic fiber
The blood is under high pressure
The stretch without bursting and regain their shape afterwards
Name 3 properties for veins
The blood is under the lowest pressure
It has a large lumen(space inside)
Valves to prevent blood from flowing backwards
2 properties for capillaries
One blood cell wide
Have thin walls allowing substances to easily diffuse
What is the heart
An organ that pumps blood all around the body
What does the vena cava do
Brings deoxygenated blood back to the heart from the rest of the body
Pulmonary vein
Brings oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart
What is the function of the aorta
It Carrie’s oxygenated blood from the heart to the body
Right ventricle
Left ventricle
The right pumps blood to the lungs for gas exchange and the left pumps to the rest of the body
