Q

Stages of cell cycle:

A

-Before a cell can divide it needs to grow and increase the number of sub-celluar structures such as ribosomes and mitochondria.
-The DNA replicates to form two copies of each chromosome.
- In mitosis one set of chromosomes is pulled to each end of the cell and the nucleus divides.
-The cytoplasm and cell membranes divide to form two identical cells.

Q

What is a stem cell?

A

An undifferentiated cell of an organism which is capable of giving rise to many more cells of the same type, and from which certain other cells can arise from differentiation.

Q

What happens in theraputic cloning?

A

An embryo is produced with the same genes as the patient. Stem cells from the embryo are not rejected by the patients body and can be used for medical treatment.

Q

Advantages of using stem cells from meristems?

A

-can produce clones quickly and economically
- rare species can be cloned to protect them from extinction.
- crop plants with special feautures such as disease resistance can be cloned to produce large numbers of identical plants for farmers.

14
Q

What does diffusion allow substances to do?

A

move in and out of cells across the cell membranes

15
Q

what is diffusion?

A

The spreading out of the particles of any substance in solution, particles of a gas, resulting in a net movement from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.

16
Q

examples of diffusion

A

carbon dioxide and oxygen are transported in and out cells in gas exchange. The waste product is urea that goes from cells into blood plasma for excretion in the kidney.

17
Q

Factors that affect the rate of diffusion

A

-the difference in concentrations(concentration gradient)
- the temperature
-the surface area of the membrane
