Bio Quiz 6 Flashcards
Stomach
Is a “J” shaped tube that lies below the diaphragm and partially behind the liver in the upper abdominal cavity. The inner mucosa layer is folded into structures known as rugae. The mucosa also contains gastric pits. The PH of the contents of the stomach is between 2-3.
Rugae
Folds in the inner lining of the stomach that increase surface area for CD and AB
Gastric Pits
These pits produce and secrete gastric juices that aid in CD
Muscularis of the stomach
Composed of 3 layers of smooth muscle (out to in)-
Longitudinal muscle
Circular muscle
Oblique Muscle
Functions of the stomach
Stores and mixes chyme
CD of proteins and it begins fat digestion
MD through peristalsis and churning
AB of water, alcohol, and drugs
Chyme
A soupy liquid mixture of small food particles, mixed with gastric juices
Sphincter
These are valves composed of smooth muscle and therefore they are under involuntary control
Cardiac Sphincter
Controls the passage of bolus from the esophagus into the stomach. It also prevents the back flow of the contents of the stomach into the esophagus
Pyloric Sphincter
Controls the passage of chyme from the stomach into the duodenum. Also it prevents the back flow of materials from the duodenum to the stomach
4 Regions of the stomach
Fundus
Cardiac region
Body
Pyloric Region
Cardiac region
Where bolus enters the stomach. May increase in size and swell for storage
Fundus
Is found above cardiac sphincter and it is for storage overflow. It may contain swallowed air.
Body
Large central portion of the stomach that secretes gastric juices containing; pepsinogen, gastric lipase, renin, and HCL.
Pyloric Region
The narrow region leading to the duodenum that secretes gastric juices containing; pepsinogen, gastric lipase, renin, and gastrin
Serosa
Outter covering composed of connective tissue. Flexible, but easy to puncture.
