Muscularis
It is composed of 2 layers of smooth muscle; Longitudinal muscle and circular muscle
Smooth muscle is involuntary muscle which means that you do not have to consciously think about it in order to contract and/or relax. These muscles control peristalsis.
Submucosa
It is made up of connective tissue and it contains; blood vessels that supply blood to the muscularis. Nerves that conduct electrical impulses to the muscularis from the brain to facilitate contractions and/or relaxations.
Lymphatic vessels which drain excess fluid away from the esophagus
Mucosa
The inner lining of the esophagus that is covered in mucous. It is slippery and extremely tough.
