Bio- Lesson 1 Flashcards
Digestion
The mechanical and chemical breakdown of food particles into smaller absorbable monomers
Monomers
A food particle that is small enough to pass through the membrane of the digestive tract
Mechanical Digestion (MD)
The breakdown of food through physical means such as: Mastication, Peristalsis, Churning and emulsification.
MD also mixes food with the digestive juices and enzymes
Chemical Digestion (CD)
The breakdown of food through a series of catabolic reactions tat are catalyzed by enzymes and digestive juices
Metabolism
The sum of all the chemical reactions of the body
Catabolism
Reactions in which large molecules are broken down into smaller molocules
Anabolism
Reactions in which smaller particles are linked together to form larger molecules
Digestive tract (alimentary canal)
The tract that is “a tube within a tube” and includes: Pharynx, esophagus, stomach small intestine, and large intestine. Human digestion is extracellular, which means it happens outside your cells.
absorption
The food monomers diffuse through the digestive tract into either the blood or lymph
