Pharynx (Throat)
Function: Serves as both an air passageway during breathing and a bolus passageway during deglutition (swallowing)
The muscles of the pharynx are classified s skeletal or striated muscle; These muscles are under voluntary control. This means you must consciously think about them in order to contract and/or relax
The muscles of the pharynx control deglutition
Epiglottis
Function: Prevents bolus from entering the respiratory passages. “food from going down the wrong tube”
A flap of cartilage that closest opening to the larynx during swallowing.
Esophagus
Functions:
1. Transports bolus to the stomach
2. Secrets mucous that helps lubricate bolus for easy transportation
3. There is some MD by way of peristalsis
A muscular, collapsible tube that is approximately 25cm in length. It connects the pharynx to the stomach
