Bio-Pac 07: Vocabulary Flashcards
Plate Tectonics
The geological explanation theory for how the continents move.
Spontaneous Generation
A process by which life was thought to be produced from non-living matter.
Biogenesis
The idea that living organisms come only from other living organisms.
Protocell
A large, ordered structure that carries out some activities associated with life such as growth, division, or metabolism.
Archaeobacteria
A group of prokaryotes that live in harsh conditions with little sunlight and oxygen, such as hot sulfur springs or deep-sea vents.
Fossil
Any evidence of an organism that lived long ago.
Cast
When a mold of an organism is created, it often becomes filled by minerals in the surrounding rock, producing a replica of the original organism.
Mold
When an organism is buried, it can decay, leaving an empty space in the rock that is the exact shape of the organism.
Imprint
Sometimes fossils form before sediments harden into rock. Thin objects, such as leaves or feathers, fall into sediments such as mud often leave imprints.
Paleontologist
Scientists that study ancient life – work with fossils.
Geologist
A person who studies rocks and minerals.
