bio chap 6 Flashcards
phototrophs
organisms that capture energy from sunlight
***use energy of sunlight to convert CO2 and H20 into sugar and oxygen, sugars have energy that synthesizes ATP, thus giving energy.
chemotrophs
organisms deriving energy directly from organic molecules like glucose, (Animals)
autotrophs
“self feeders”, make their own organic sources of carbon (Plants, photoautotrophs)
heterotrophs
organisms not capable to convert carbon dioxide into organic forms of carbon. Eat other organisms “other feeders” (chemoheterotrophs)
photoheterotrophs
microrganisms gain energy from sunlight but get carbon from preformed organic microcules
chemoautotrophs
microrganisms extract energy from inorganic sources but build their own organic molecules (extreme environments)
Metabolism
is the set of chemical rx that sustain life.
**building and breaking down of sugars such as glucose, and the harnessing and release of energy..
catabolism
set of chemical reactions that break down molecules, into smaller units and in the process produce ATP
Anabolism
set of chemical reactions, that build molecules from smaller units and require an input of energy, usually in ATP
