Bio 1 - evolutionary history Flashcards
5 major extinction events
Dinosaur extinction was the last one. Know two:
- 65 MYA Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary (C-T)
- 250 MYA Permian extinction - largest loss of life (~95%)
Connections between continents has an effect of the animals on each
- between N. America and asia
2. between N. and S. America
Formation of the Himalayan mountains
Himalayan mountains the result of India crashing into Asian plate
Trilobytes
Wiped out in Permian extinction
Pterosaurs
Debate whether the big ones could fly or not
Ammonites
Wiped out at 65 MYA extinction
Types of Dinosaurs
- “Saurischians”: From lizard-like hips
2. “Orinthischians”: From bird-like hips
Evidence supporting metor theory (65 MYA)
- Iridium around the world
- Meter 6km across found - Chiexulab crater
- Tsunami evidence in Texas
- Evidence of soot at 65 MYA
- Shocked quartz
Differences between apes and humans
- 4 curves of spine vs. 2
- Foramen magnum is at the base of skull rather than back of skull
- Apes dental features include Diastema (space by the canines)
Archaeological finds
- Mostly in east Africa (“Rift” is exposing layers of rock)
Don Johanson
Found “Lucy” skeleton, dated 3 MYA. A. Aftarensis
Mary Leakey
Footprints of human and child in ash (3 MYA)
Evolution of humans
Was branchy. Some species existed at the same time (neanderthals in Europe).
