Billings method Flashcards
What is the pocket of shaw?
In the vagina, there are pockets that dries out the mucus as it passes through the vagina: hormonally controlled
Describe the menstrual cycle as the Billings method sees it
Menstruation occurs: the sensations change from wet to sticky.dry
Then the woman goes into her basic infertile period (mucus plug usually blocks the cervix) and the same discharge pattern is seen throughout
Then her discharge changes (mucus plug released), and she enters the fertile window. She continues to have discharge until she is dry again. The last day of wetness is ovulation
Discharge changes or dries out and she is in the luteal phase
Menstruation occurs again
What is the early day rule 1? And why is it in effect?
Avoid intercourse on the days of heavy bleeding during menstruation
Ovulation can occur early in the cycle (can occur as early as day 5) and menstrual bleeding CAN obscure the mucus
What is the early day rule 2? Why is it in effect?
Alternate evenings that you have intercourse when these days are noted infertile
Seminal fluid can obscure the mucus so you need to make sure that she is still dry the day after intercourse and the day of to ensure that the fertile window has not opened
What is the Early day rule 3 and why is it in effect?
Avoid intercourse on days of discharge or bleeding that interrupts the infertile pattern
Allow for 3 days of BIP before intercourse to make sure she is not fertile
Change in BIP- 1,2,3 wait and see
What is the peak rule?
From the beginning of the 4th day past the peak (after the early day 3 rule) intercourse can happen everyday until the cycle ends
