Bill of Rights
The bill of rights guarantees citizens freedom and this is the soul of the constitution.

1st Amendment
The 1st Amendment protects 5 rights.
Gives the freedom of religion, speech, the press, assembly and petition
2nd Amendment
Gives the right to bear arms.
Restrictions
1) must be 18 or older with a license
2) must have a federal background check
3) must have a permit for a concealed weapon
4) there are limits on automatic assault weapons
3rd Amendment
Quartering(housing) of troops.
No soldier can be housed in your home without your permission
4th Amendment
Search and Seizure
An Authority must have a warrant and show “probable cause” before searching your private space
Probable cause
Reasonable belief that a person has committed a crime
5th Amendment
Criminal proceedings and Eminent Domain.
1) you have the right to a grand jury.
2) Protects the accused against double jeopardy.
3) Protects the accused against self-incrimination.

Grand Jury
The grand jury is made up of 25 people and they decide if there is enough evidence to bring you to trial.
Double Jeopardy
Someone can’t be charged twice for the same crime
Self-Incrimination
You don’t have to be used as a witness against yourself
Due process
The government must respect all legal rights of its citizens
Eminent Domain
Protects Personal Property but it allows property to be purchased for public use
6th amendment
Criminal proceedings.
1) they have a right to a public, speedy trial
2) they have the right to a impartial, petite jury(12ppl)
3) the accused must be informed of the crime and their rights(Miranda rights)
4) they have the right to have witnesses in their defense
5) they have the right to an attorney (layer)
Petite jury
A petite jury is made up of 12 people and they decide if you are innocent or guilty.
The 12 must vote all or nothing
7th Amendment
Civil cases have the right to a trial.
1) right to a jury in any dispute over $20
2) you have the right to a bench trial
Bench trial
When you wave the right to a jury and let a judge make the ruling.
Criminal case
A case in which a person is accused of committing a crime (amendments 5+6)
Civil case
A dispute between to or more parties involving money (Lawsuit) -(amendment 7)
8th amendment
Punishment of Crimes.
1) Protects against a “cruel and unusual” punishment.
2) Established Bail
Established Bail
A some of money that you give to guarantee you will show up for your court date
9th Amendment
The Enumerated Rights- Says that all the rights not listed in the constitution belong to the ppl, not the government. (Meaning the rights of the ppl are not limited to just the rights listed in the Constitution. Such as travel and voting)
10th Amendment
Powers Reserved for the States.
Says that any power or right that is not specifically listed in the constitution as belonging to the Federal government belongs to individual states or the American ppl. (Speed limits, Education, etc)
