Biliary Disorders Flashcards
What are some systemic causes of acute vomiting?
(Acute pancreatitis, renal failure, Addison’s, hyperthyroidism, hepatobiliary dz, and neoplasia)
What are some primary GI causes of acute vomiting?
(Gastritis (dietary indiscretion, toxins, foreign body, drugs), foreign body obstruction, HGE, and neoplasia)
Which liver value is typically physiologically increased when a patient has an endocrine disorder?
(ALKP but within reason, a super high elevation can still indicate cholestasis)
What can cause hyperlipidemia?
(Diabetes mellitus, cholestasis, pancreatitis, and being of a certain breed with the familial disorder (cocker spaniels, shetland sheepdogs, mini schnauzers))
Gallbladder mucoceles are an abnormal accumulation of what substances within and distending the gallbladder?
(Bile and mucin)
What are some risk factors for gallbladder mucocele formation?
(Gallbladder dysmotility, hyperlipidemia, and certain endocrinopathies (cushings, hypothyroidism, and DM))
What does medical management of a gallbladder mucocele entail?
(Ursodiol, antibiotics (6-8 week course), low fat diet, and controlling secondary dzs if there are any)
What organs do the following:
- Makes bile and bile acids
- Transports bile
- Stores, concentrates, and modifies bile
- Makes bile and bile acids (Liver)
- Transports bile (Liver)
- Stores, concentrates, and modifies bile (Gallbladder)
What is the purpose of bile?
(Aids in absorption of lipids)
(T/F) Commonly dogs with gallbladder mucoceles also have cystic mucinous hyperplasia (this can cause gallbladder mucoceles), which is characterized by cystic structures filled with viscoelastic mucin and is associated with inflammation.
(F, no inflammation)
What is the most common primary malignant hepatic neoplasm in cats?
(Biliary adenocarcinoma, poor prognosis)
What diagnostic test can be performed to aid in a diagnosis of cholecystitis?
(Cholecystocentesis)
