Bilging Flashcards
List some bilging countermeasures
Three Main talking points when answering a Q like this:
1. Stop the water coming in
2. Stop the water from spreading
3. Get the water out
Stop the Water from Coming In
- Restrict water ingress (e.g. other vessel to stay in place and or use a collision patch)
- Ballasting fwd or aft or shifting weighs to bring hole above waterline
- Consider beaching
- Removal of weight, particularly from high up
Stop the Water from Spreading
- Close all watertight doors
- Consult damage control plans
- Shore up internally to prevent loss of adjacent compartment
Get the Water Out
- Use bilge pumps
- Cross flooding valves to bring vessel upright
How would cross flooding of a bilged midships side compartment effect vessels curve of Statical Stability?
- Cross flooding would reduce list
- lower freeboard ∴ θDEI reduces, Max GZ and all GZ values after θDEI reduced
