Big Data Analytics Flashcards
Big data sets
Can be tens or hundreds of terabytes and sometimes petabytes
Big data definition
Big data generates value from the storage and processing of very large quantities of digital information that cannot be analysed with traditional computing techniques
Properties of big data
Cannot be easily stored on a single computer. Are too slow to share over a firm’s network. Are too slow to share across the Internet
Examples
Starbucks. McDonald’s.
5V’s of big data
Volume. Velocity. Variety. Veracity. Value.
Data exhaust
Due to the challenges of volume, velocity and variety, big data generated by many organisations gives them little choice but to ignore or rapidly excrete very large quantities of potentially valuable information.
Two ways to think about data
Data snapshots. Data timelines.
