Big batty Muscles Flashcards
1
Q
Describe smooth muscle
A
- contracts without conscious control
- found: walls of internal organs (not heart)
2
Q
Describe cardiac muscle
A
- contracts without conscious control
- only found in heart
3
Q
Describe skeletal muscle
A
- skeletal muscle type used in locomotion (movement)
- eg; biceps and triceps move the lower arm
4
Q
define the term antagonistic pairs
A
when one muscle group contracts (agonist) the other muscle group relaxes (antagonist)
5
Q
describe the sliding filament theory
A
- Ca2+ ions released from sarcoplasmic reticulum into sarcoplasm
- Ca2+ diffuse & bind to troponin changing tertiary structure cause tropomyosin to move exposing myosin head binding sites on actin filament
- myosin head bind to actin binding sites forming cross bridges
- mysosin head “nods” pulling actin filament short distance (power stroke)
- ADP+Pi released from myosin head
- new ATP bind to myosin head, breaks cross bridge seperates from actin, action of ATP hydrolase, energy released recocks myosin head
