Q

What is the meaning of calling God “I am”

A

“I AM” is a statement of the nature of God as being—self-sustaining, self-sufficing, all-powerful, self-determined being. “I am that I am” means, “My being sustains My being.” Source: Life Without Lack by Dallas Willard p 18

Yahweh has commonly been interpreted as a statement of God’s self-existence or aseity, terms theologians use to indicate that God had no beginning and does not depend for continued existence on anything other than his own self. Q

5 Ways to spot the bad people in your life

A
  1. They are passive aggressive and avoid being straight forward with you at all costs.
  2. They appear unsupportive and never seem to be happy for me when I am happy.
  3. You feel uncomfortable around them and find yourself sitting on edge about what you say or do around them.
  4. They don’t listen to you and often want the conversation to revolve around them or something they’re interested in.
  5. They don’t make an effort. You usually check up on them to see if they’re okay, but they don’t do the same for you and you’re always the one who makes plans in order for you both to see each other.

27
Q

What are Andy Stanley’s Rules of the road, five tips to reach your destination safely?

A
  1. Don’t travel alone

You don’t allow yourself to get isolated; so ignore the voice in your head that says I don’t need anybody because you were created in to live in communit; who we do life with determines how we do in life.

Don’t gravitate towards acceptance

In every single transition in life, especially relationally, we are prone to gravitate toward acceptance. that is the person or persons who, except us first become the people that we spend a season of life with. Look for people who share your values. A value is what you have pre-determined is most important to you.

The author of Proverbs says, when you do life with people you understand that you have to be disciplined in this season because of what you want in the next season, you become wise. Wisdom is understanding that life is connected. That what you do today impacts what happens tomorrow.

The companion of fools may never become a fool, but the companion of fools will suffer the same consequence as the fool because that’s who they are traveling with.

  1. Don’t pick up strangers.

A stranger is someone who is not like you. I’m not saying, don’t meet people and don’t be friendly. Be kind, but be careful.

Is there anyone you are doing life with, if you’re real honest, that they make you less healthy? They cause you to doubt yourself They are kimd of dismissive of your values and at times you are almost intimidated to be yourself and you find yourself being a different person when you are around that person. That is a stranger and you need to drop them off. God loves them but you can’t handle them.

  1. Choose a destination and borrow a map.

Choose a destination - Everybody ends up somewhere in life. If we don’t choose what we want this season to look like or what we want to look like at the end of this season, people and life in general, they’ll just decide for us. Direction not intention determines destination and each season builds on the next. We need to choose the destinations. We want to reach at the end of this season in life.

Borrow a Map - Somebody has already been to where you’re hoping to arrive. They’ve been there and they’ve done that. And they’ve done it poorly or they’ve done it well.

When you enter a new season of life, you don’t know what you’re doing because every season is different. So the wisest thing you can do is find somebody and borrow their map.

One of the best things you can do is you can reach ahead a season ahead of you life. We don’t know how much we know until someone asks.

The Vernon Law - Experience is a hard teacher because it gives the test first and the lesson after.

Asking for help isn’t weakness. It’s a sign of maturity.

  1. Pay attention to the signs.

Why does people pay attention to the signs. They see what’s going on with their friends or they see what’s going on at work. It is always tempting to ignore the signs. It is most tempting to ignore the signs relationally. But relationships are like a combustible engine. Nothing improves improves with neglect.

If more than one person has brought something to your attention that you need to work on, that’s a sign, especially if they don’t know each other.

28
Q

What are the four components of discipleship?

A
  1. Theology is related to the measurement of knowing.
  2. Spiritual formation is related to the measurement of being.
  3. Ministry is related to the measurement of doing.
  4. Coaching is related to the measurement of reproducing.

The complete process is salvation.

32
Q

Jack Hayford’s philosophy is to “make decisions against yourself” by not choosing the path of least resistance. Paul puts it this way in 1 Corinthians:

A

1 Corinthians 10:23 CSV Christian standard version

“Everything is permissible,” but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible,” but not everything builds up.

1 Corinthians 10:23 NIV

“I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “ I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive.

1 Corinthians 6:12 NIV

I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything.

1 Corinthians 6:12 NLT

You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is good for you. And even though “I am allowed to do anything,” I must not become a slave to anything.

In the Great Eight, Paul also says, “walk not after the flesh.”, which is another way to say “make decisions against yourself”

33
Q

What is the biblical equivalent of “More Cowbell”?

A

More of the Holy Spirit is the answer to every prayer and every problem.

In their book If: Trading Your If Only Regrets for God’s What If Possibilities, Mark and Parker Batterson write: “The Holy Spirit doesn’t make you any better than anybody else. He makes you better than yourself! 1 He gives us wisdom beyond our knowledge, power beyond our strength, and gifting beyond our natural ability. With the help of the Holy Spirit, we become better than our best effort, better than our best thought. We become the best version of ourselves possible. I mean, it takes a lifetime, but it seems well worth it, right?”

And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.””

36
Q

The Great Commandment

A

“One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.””

Q

It was in the ______________ synagogue that Jesus gave the Sermon on the Bread of Life (John 6:35-59) ” Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life and I will raise him up at the last day”.

A

Capernaum

Although dating the synagogue has been problematic, many believe the synagogue from this time was black basalt rock and now lies beneath a more recent construction. In this synagogue Jesus would regularly preach (John 6:59, Luke 4:33). Christ expelled a demon from a possessed man here (Mark 1:21-27) and cured a Roman officer’s servant of palsy, the centurion is thought to have had the synagogue built (Luke 7:3). Here Jesus is also famous for raising the daughter of Jairus from the dead (Luke 8:41-53).

The original synagogue was destroyed and later replaced in approximately 200AD.
