What is a manic episode?
- distinct period of elevated, expansive (euphoric) or irritable mood
- abnormal energy (relative to the person) for 7 days and most of the day
- hospitalization
How many criterion’s must be met for irritable mood?
4 or more
How may criterion’s must be met for euphoric mood?
3 or more
What are the criterion’s for a mania episode?
- Inflated self-esteem or grandiosity (sense of superiority)
- Decrease need of sleep
- Pressured talking, need to talk a lot, non-stop
- Flight of ideas, racing thoughts
- Distractibility
- Increase in goal-directed activity (getting way into an activity)
- Psycho-motor agitation - overly involved in activities, being restless, high levels of activities
- High risk takers w/ potentially painful consequences
- Marked impairment in social/occupational life.
- Any psychotic feature that merged
What is a hypomania episode?
- distinct abnormality (relative to the person) in mood for 4 DAYS, at least & for most of the day via an elevated, expansive or irritable emotions & abnormal increase in energy.
- 3 or more symptoms = euphoric
- 4 or more symptoms = irritable
Bi-Polar disorder type 1
- Mania, hypermania or depressive symptoms
- must have experienced mania episode once in their life & has to be the most recent episode
- 1 week in that mood
- if getting anti-depressants & go into a mania or hypomania episode, it is a confirmation for bi-polar disorder
Bi-Polar disorder type 2
- Hypomania cycles w/ depression
- never reaches full mania episode
Major depressive disorder
- unipolar mood disorder
- mood has to be clinically significant
- 2 weeks
- Anhedonic (down & out mood)
- 5/9 criterion for diagnosis for major depressive disorder
What is the criterion’s for major depressive disorder?
- Sad mood most of the day
- Lost of interest or pleasure in most activities that they once enjoyed or participate in.
- Significant weight loss or weight gain (5%/month)
- Insomnia or hypersomnia
- Psycho-motor depression or agitation (like on auto pilot, another ex. movie seen where the man is “sleeping with his eyes open:
- Fatigue or loss of energy
- Thoughts of guilt (feel responsible for the wrongdoings in the world) or worthlessness
- Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
- Person feeling suicidal, making suicidal plans
What is Persistent depressive disorder
- Depressive symptoms of loneliness, sadness, feeling empty for almost everyday for 2 YEARS.
- Must meet 2 or the 6 criterion’s
What are the 6 criterion’s for Persistent Depressive Disorder
- Poor appetite or overeating
- Difficulty sleeping or hypersomnia
- Fatigue (feeling tired)
- Cognitive self-downing, low self-esteem (ex: person feeling that they cannot go to college bc they feel they are not smart enough.
- Problems concentrating
- Pessimistic (anticipates undesirable outomes) about self or future
Cyclothymia
- Symptoms of hyper mania & mania
- Never reach the intensity of hypermania or depression
- ex: dr. king
What is REBT
- Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy
- Philosophical
- Getting the “musts” back to preferences
- Has many cognitive behavioral components.
What is a case example for bipolar disorder?
The female in the case book showed symptoms of Bi-polar disorder type 2, where she had a hypomania episode, cycled with depression, lack need for sleep, increased in goal-directed activities, marked impairment in social occupational life
