What are the criterion’s for a mania episode?

A
  1. Inflated self-esteem or grandiosity (sense of superiority)
  2. Decrease need of sleep
  3. Pressured talking, need to talk a lot, non-stop
  4. Flight of ideas, racing thoughts
  5. Distractibility
  6. Increase in goal-directed activity (getting way into an activity)
  7. Psycho-motor agitation - overly involved in activities, being restless, high levels of activities
  8. High risk takers w/ potentially painful consequences
  9. Marked impairment in social/occupational life.
  10. Any psychotic feature that merged

What is a hypomania episode?

A
  • distinct abnormality (relative to the person) in mood for 4 DAYS, at least & for most of the day via an elevated, expansive or irritable emotions & abnormal increase in energy.
  • 3 or more symptoms = euphoric
  • 4 or more symptoms = irritable

Bi-Polar disorder type 1

A
  • Mania, hypermania or depressive symptoms
  • must have experienced mania episode once in their life & has to be the most recent episode
  • 1 week in that mood
  • if getting anti-depressants & go into a mania or hypomania episode, it is a confirmation for bi-polar disorder

What is the criterion’s for major depressive disorder?

A
  1. Sad mood most of the day
  2. Lost of interest or pleasure in most activities that they once enjoyed or participate in.
  3. Significant weight loss or weight gain (5%/month)
  4. Insomnia or hypersomnia
  5. Psycho-motor depression or agitation (like on auto pilot, another ex. movie seen where the man is “sleeping with his eyes open:
  6. Fatigue or loss of energy
  7. Thoughts of guilt (feel responsible for the wrongdoings in the world) or worthlessness
  8. Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  9. Person feeling suicidal, making suicidal plans

A
  1. Poor appetite or overeating
  2. Difficulty sleeping or hypersomnia
  3. Fatigue (feeling tired)
  4. Cognitive self-downing, low self-esteem (ex: person feeling that they cannot go to college bc they feel they are not smart enough.
  5. Problems concentrating
  6. Pessimistic (anticipates undesirable outomes) about self or future
