What is Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)?
Hyperplastic process, meaning there is an increased number of cells
What is most common benign tumor in men?
BPH
BPH is age related, at what ages do most men report sx?
55 y/o, 25% of men report obstructive voiding sx
75 y/o, 50% of men report decrease in force and caliber
What is the most important tool used for the evaluation of BPH?
American Urological Association (AUA) sx index
What labs and findings would be found with BPH?
UA: to exclude infection or hematuria
PSA
What imaging should be done for BPH?
Not routinely ordered
CT or renal ultrasound
What imaging should be ordered for BPH in determining surgical approach for treatment?
Cytoscopy
How should a patient with AUA score between 0-7 be treated?
Watchful waiting
What medications can be given for BPH?
Alpha blockers (terazosin, tamsulosin)
What are surgical indications for BPH?
Refractory urinary retention (failing at least one attempt at catheter removal)
Large bladder diverticula
When should BPH be referred to urology?
AUA score >7
Urinary retention
Hematuria
Recurrent UTIs
