Benign Eyelid Disorders (2) Flashcards
Squamous papilloma:
Why’s it important to know about?
What does it typically look like?
➊ Most common benign eyelid tumour
➋ Papillary shape with keratinised surface
Blepharitis:
What is it?
What occurs here?
→ What can it lead to?
How does it present?
How is it managed?
➊ Inflammation of the eyelid margins
➋ Dysfunction of Meibomian glands, which secrete thicker oils onto eye surface
→ Styes and chalazions
➌ • Painful, gritty, itchy, dry eyes
• Worse in the morning
➍ • Lid hygiene - Hot compress and gentle cleaning of eyelid margins to remove debris, using cotton wool dipped in baby shampoo and warm water
• Avoid eye makeup
• Lubricating eye drops
Stye:
What is the medical term for it?
What is it?
→ What are the functions of these glands?
How does it present?
How is it managed?
➊ Hordeolum externum
➋ Infection of glands of Zeis or Moll
→ • Glands of Zeis – Sweat glands at base of eyelashes
• Glands of Moll – Sebaceous glands at base of eyelashes
➌ Tender red lump along the eyelid that may contain pus
➍ Lid hygiene – Hot compress and analgesia
Chalazion:
What is the medical term for it?
What is it?
How does its presentation differ from a Stye?
How is it managed?
➊ Hordeolum internum
➋ Infection of Meibomian glands
➌ Deep lump, tends to be more painful and point inwards towards eye
➍ Lid hygiene – Hot compress and analgesia
Entropion and Ectropion:
What is Entropion?
→ What can it lead to?
What is Ectropion? What’s it due to?
→ What can it cause?
➊ Turning in of eyelid
→ Causes pain as eyelashes irritate cornea, therefore resulting in corneal damage and ulceration
➋ Turning out of eyelid due to laxity or facial palsy
→ Exposure keratopathy as the eyeball is exposed and not adequately lubricated and protected
