Hartmann’s procedure
Primary resection/ anastomosis
Only if no improvement or complications
What are the symptoms of colitis?
Diarrhoea + blood abdominal cramps dehydration sepsis wt loss, anaemia
How should colitis be diagnosed?
Plain X-ray
Sigmoidoscopy + biopsy
stool cultures
barium enema
How should ulcerative or Crohn’s colitis be treated?
IV fluids
IV steroids - once infective/ischaemic colitis ruled out
GI rest
Is colonic angiodysplasia usually on the right or left side of the colon?

What is the treatment for colonic angiodysplasia?
embolisation
endoscopic ablation
surgical resection
What are possible causes of large bowel obstruction?
Colorectal cancer
Sigmoid or caecal volvulus
Pseudobstruction
Faecal impaction
How is sigmoid volulus diagnosed?
plain X-ray abdo
rectal contrast
How is sigmoid volvulus treated?
Flatus tube
Surgical resection
Who does pseudo-obstruction of the colon tend to occur in?
elderly/debilitated
