Q

CBS (Cystathione Beta Synthase)

A

CBS (cystathionine beta synthase) catalyzes the first step of the transsulfuration pathway, from homocysteine to cystathionine. Defects cause an upregulation of the CBS enzyme and the enzyme works too fast. Causing low levels of cystathionine and homocysteine and high taurine and ammonia. Sulfur sensitivity and BH4 depletion are common.
