how to tell the difference between peripheral facial nerve vs a stroke?

A

unilateral facial weakness of both upper and lower parts of the face are characteristic central nervous system process (stroke) will spare the upper facial muscles (so still can raise forehead)

classic Bell’s palsy symptoms

A

change in taste, hyperacusus (intolerance of loud sounds due to the stapedius muscle) ipsilateral pain and paresthesia without objective sensory loss.

A

stroke

supranuclear palsy = upper motor neuron palsy

clinically upper face is spared
