What is Behcet’s disease?
Systemic inflammatory vasculitis which is associated with HLA-B51
Where is Behcet’s common?
along the old silk road from the Mediterranean to China
What is the cause of behcet’s?
Possibly neutrophil hyper-reactivity but not well understood
What gene is associated with Behcet’s?
HLA-B51
What is the presentation of Behcet’s?
- Recurrent aphthous ulcers
- Genital ulcerations
- Erythema nodosum
- Thrombophlebitis
What investigations are done for Behcet’s?
- Usually clinical diagnosis:
2. Can perform pathergy testing (stick a needle in forearm and papule forms in 48 hours)
What is the management of the orogenital ulceration?
topical steroids are sufficient
What is the management of organ involvement in Behcet’s?
prednisolone plus immunosuppressant (usually azathioprine)
What are DDx for Behcet’s?
- Crohn’s
