Q

how does the internal working model influence poor parenting?

A

demonstrated by HARLOW (monkeys)

  • harlow demonstrated a link between poor attachments and later difficulties with parenting.
  • Quienten et al showed the same in humans- the lack of IMW means individuals lack a reference past to subsequently form relationships with their children.

Q

how does the IMW influence mental health

A

demonstrated by BOWLBY-maternal deprivation

  • lack of an attachment during the critical period (2.5 years) in development would result in a lack of internal working model.
    • children with attachment disorders don’t prefer an attachment type meaning they find it difficult to interact
    • attachment disorders have been classed as a distinctive psychiatric condition.
