Behaviour Sciences (Emotions) Flashcards

1
Q

What is the Cannon-Bard Thalamic theory?

A
  • An emotion-arousing stimulus simultaneously triggers physiological responses and the subjective experience of emotion.
  • Stimulus ==> Physiological response + feeling emotion (At the same time and one is not dependent upon the other)

Q

What is the pathway for the Cannon-Bard Thalamic theory?

A
  • Info from the stimulus goes to the thalamus. From there, info is simultaneously relayed to the cerebral cortex (produces emotional experience) and to the hypothalamus and ANS
  • Thalamus transmits a signal to the amygdala (limbic system) and to the ANS for the physiological response

What theory is this?

  • See a snake ==> afraid and tremble
  • Starting a new job ==> feel nervous and experience an upset stomach

Q

What is James-Lange theory?

A
  • Experience of emotion is the awareness of the physiological responses to emotion-arousing stimuli
  • Physiological reactions to events leads to emotions
  • Stimulus→ Physiological Response → Emotion

Q

What is the pathway of the James-Lange theory?

A

Routed to the limbic system by the Thalamus → Limbic system initiate the Hypothalamus and Sympathetic Nervous System → Sensation from the body’s arousal are sent back to the cortex and produce conscious feelings of emotions. Response → Related Emotion

Q

What theory is this?

  • Chased by a dog -> Heart rate increases -> Feel scared
  • Watching a sad movie/Look at a photo -> Cries -> Feel sad
  • See a bear -> Tremble -> Emotion ( I am trembling. Therefore, I am afraid)

Q

What is the Schachter and Singer Theory?

A
  • To experience emotion one must be physically aroused and cognitively label the arousal.
  • The cause of physiological arousal had to be identified before a person could feel and label the response as a particular emotion
  • Arousal spurs emotion but, cognition directs it. Stimulus → Physiological Response + Cognitive Label → Emotion

Q

What is the pathway for the Cognitive theory?

A

Information from the stimulus travels first to the cerebral cortex where it is both interpreted and experienced. Then a message is sent down to the limbic system and ANS that results in physiological arousal.

Q

What is the Solomon’s opponent Theory?

A
  • Emotional responses to stimuli are regulated by an underlying physiological mechanism.
  • Emotions act in opposite pairs - pleasure is an opposing emotion to pain.
  • However, if a person is repeatedly exposed to something that they fear, the emotion will eventually trigger an opposite emotion which will make the first emotion gets fade and weaker while the opponent will get stronger.

Q

What does sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system do?

A
  • sympathetic nervous system prepares the body to fight or flight
  • parasympathetic maintenance functions that conserves energy and facilitates growth and development.

Q

What activates when there is action?

A

SNS

17
Q

What happens to highly active SNS and inactive SNS?

A
  • highly aroused
  • low state of arousal
18
Q

What happens in a lie detector test?

A

BP, heart rate, breathing rate, sweating with a device called the polygraph

19
Q

What is the assumption for the lie-detector test?

A

People will react emotionally and show physiological arousal when they tell lies

20
Q

What are the four basic elements needed for emotion to arise?

A
  • stimulus-which can be certain people, other creatures, an even or a situation
  • conscious experience-what we feel, which can be negative or positive
  • physiological arousal-produced by the nervous systems
    -behavior-action produced
