Behavior Management Flashcards
How to change challenging behaviors
- Antecedent (proactive) strategies
-how to prevent challenging behavior from occurring - Consequence (reactive) strategies
-how to respond to challenging behavior
Extinction
-a previously reinforced behavior is no longer reinforced
Varies by function
-sensory= no longer able to experience preferred sensation
-escape/avoidance=behavior no longer results in task being removed
-attention=behavior no longer results in social response (aka planned ignoring)
-tangible= behavior no longer results in access to item
Extinction burst
Behavior may temporarily increase before it starts to decrease
Differential Reinforcement
-choose one behavior it increase and one to decrease
-reinforce chosen behavior to increase, and extinguish (ignore) behavior to decrease
Differential Reinforcement of other behaviors (DRO)
Delivering reinforcement when client has refrained from target behavior for a specific period of time
Ex. Client engages in screaming. Reinforcement is provided when client refrains from screaming
Differential Reinforcement of incompatible behaviors (DRI)
Reinforcing presence of a behavior that is incompatible with target behavior while witholding reinforcement in presence of target behavior
Ex. Client is constantly getting up out of seat. Reinforce incompatible behavior of sitting in chair
Differential Reinforcement of alternative behaviors (DRA)
Reinforcing presence of alternative replacement behavior while withholding in presence of target behavior
Ex. You want to increase instances of client asking for a break instead of swiping things off table. Both requesting a break and swiping things off table can occur at the same time but you reinforce anyways when they ask for break “thank you for asking for a break”
Differential Reinforcement of alternative behaviors (DRA)
Reinforcing presence of alternative replacement behavior while withholding in presence of target behavior
