ABC Data/Functions Of Behavior Flashcards
What is behavior?
-something an organism does
-must be observable and measurable
Topography
What a behavior looks like
Functional assessment
Systematic method of assessment for obtaining information about the function of a problem behavior
ABCs of Behavior
Antecedent
Behavior
Consequence
ABCs: Antecedent
Any environmental changes that occurs immediately before the behavior
ABCs: Behavior
Describe the behavior of interest
ABCs: Consequence
Any environmental changes that take place immediately after the behavior
Purpose of behavioral assessment
-identify patterns of antecedents, behaviors, and consequences
-hypothesize why the client is engaging in the behavior of interest
-identify replacement behaviors that serve a similar function
2 Types of consequences
-Reinforcement
-Punishment
Reinforcement
a consequence that makes a behavior more likely to occur in the future
Punishment
A consequence that makes a behavior less likely to occur in the future
Positive reinforcement
Something is added that increases a behavior
Positive punishment
Something is added to decrease a behavior
Negative reinforcement
Something is taken away to increase a behavior
Negative punishment
Something is removed to decrease a behavior
Function
Why people do what they do (individuals engage in different behaviors for different reasons)
-patterns in the environment and behavior are called “functions” of behavior
5 functions of behavior: S.E.A.T.
- Sensory/automatic function
- Escape/avoidance
- Attention
- Tangible
- Sensory/automatic function
-automatic= other person not needed to deliver consequence
-client engages in behavior because it feels good
-not social nature
Common behaviors associated with sensory/automatic function
-SIB
-Skin picking/pinching
-Stimming
-playing with toys alone
- Escape/avoidance
Ending or avoiding nonpreferred stimulus (person, demand, activity)
-social=someone else involved
-negative= task being removed
Common behaviors associated with escape/avoidance
Appropriate
-request to be all done
-requedt for break
Inappropriate
-elopement
-refusal
-property destruction
- Attention
Behavior results in any social interaction (eye contact, physical proximity, vocal promting, praise/reprimand)
-social= someone else involved
-positive= attention being provided
Common behaviors associated with attention
Appropriate
-saying persons name
-tapping on arm
Inappropriate
-hitting
-pinching
-crying
-SIB
- Tangible
Behavior can serve the function of access to items or activities (grabbing, aggression towards others)
-social= someone else involved
-positive= access being provided
Examples of behaviors associated with tangible function
Appropriate
-pointing
-reaching
-mand
Inappropriate
-crying
-hitting
-SIB
