Bed mobility and Transfers Flashcards
List and define the 4 stage model of Disability Adjustment (medical model)
Vigilance: Watching self experience an event
Disruption: Confused, lost, delirious. Love ones serve as an emotional anchor
Enduring self: process of recognizing the current situation’s differences from your past. Support from others is needed to control sense of panic and fear. OT’s can help preserve hope.
Striving to regain self: This is the time to coach and brainstorm with client
List three important rules for safe body mechanics
- Increase base of support
- Lower center of gravity
- Maintain vertical gravity line
- Feet point towards what you want to move
- Don’t combine movements
- Ask for help if you need it
- Get close to the item or person being moved
What are the pros of using a gait belt?
- Secure for moving pt. without grabbing onto their clothes, or straining your back
- Good for stabilizing off balance pt.
What are the cons of using a gait belt?
- shearing of the skin
- can obstruct equipment attached to pt.
- Not for people with respiratory problems, recent chest, back or abdominal surgery,
What are the 4 steps to the Egress test and the appropriate transfers?
- One inch clearance test (slide board, squat pivot)
- Stand up 2x (squat-pivot)
- March in place 3x(stand pivot)
- Step forward and back 3x (walk to transfer)
Name 3 reasons to use mechanical lift
- Inability to lift trunk away from bed at 45-degree angle
- Inability to move legs against gravity in supine
- Inability to maintain erect sitting at bedside with feet supported
- Vital signs outside normal range, or physiological intolerance to effort of rolling and sitting up
- Insufficient staff numbers
- Significant change in mental or physical status
