What was the aim?
To investigate the effects of pro-longed exposure to tv on eating behaviour is Fijian adolescent girls
what was the sample?
1995- 63 adolescent Fijian girls 3 weeks after exposure to tv
1998- 65 adolescent Fijian girls, 3 years after the exposure
what was the procedure?
- Both groups of girls completed the eat 26 survey which investigates binging and purging.
- Answered questions on household ownership of tv and weight and height were measured
1998-questions on body image and dieting.
-Questions to identify disparities between them and their parents relating to diet and body image. - 30 girls who reported binging and purging were given a semi-structured interview
what were the results ?
The eat 26 above 20 increased from 12.6% to 29.2%
Self induced vomitting increased from 0 to 11.3%
What was the conclusion?
The girls beliefs and attitudes about ideal body image that had changed rather than their actual physical body size
How is it generalisable?
63 and 65 is a large sample- results can be generalised
OTOH- all girls were teenagers from Fiji- ethnocentric and gynocentric
How is it reliable?
Standardised questionnaire- can easily be repeated
OTOH- semi structured interviews - follow up questions will be different - lowers reliability
How is it applicable?
To prevent high exposure to TV to reduce the chance of bad eating behaviours
OTOH- socially sensitive
How is it valid?
Participants matched on bmi- reduces participant variables
OTOH- questionnaire may have been answered due to social desirability

Confidential
OTOH- no protection from harm- mental harm
