- kill as many G as possible
What were the main tactics? (4)
- MINES / massive ARTILLERY BOMBARDMENTS
–> G position + dugouts destroyed / smashed - CUTTING BARBED WIRE
- CROSS NO MAN’S LAND BY FOOT
–> bc of heavy packs + weapons underestimated - CARRY HEAVY PACKS
–> to defend / repair enemy trenches when taking over
What were the main obstacles? (5)
- artillery’s ability OVERESTIMATED
–> Haig knew abt the dug-outs & barbed wire - G were on HIGH GROUND

- Allied shells = POOR QUALITY

gave more time to emerge from dug-outs & set up their machine guns

- SLOW !!
–> weighted down by packs - funnelled into gaps of barbed wire
= sitting targets for G - caused 57,000 casualties
- a military disaster
