Q

What is the procedure for battery maintenance? (3)

A

1) Disconnect and clean terminals and posts
-Use terminal puller if necessary
2) Check fluid levels are over the plates.
-Only if vent caps are removable. Add distilled water if needed.
3) Reinstall terminals ensuring they are fully seated.
-Use a terminal spreader if neccessary.

15
Q

How do you determine the CCA of a battery?

A

Look for a sticker on the battery indicating CCA

-or use the make and model to search the manufactures website
-or refer to Battery OEM CCA Ratings

16
Q

When is the procedure for using the the VAT-40 Battery Load Test machine? (specs and values to be monitored)

A

-Draw ½ the CCA for 15 seconds
(e.g., 650 CCA → pull 325A) If CCA isn’t listed, draw 3× amp-hour rating

-Voltage should stay above 9.5V
(If voltage drops below 9.5V, replace battery)

17
Q

What is the risk in load testing a ‘borderline’ battery?

A

It can kill the battery making it unusable.

18
Q

How do you perform an alternator test?

A

-Hook up a DMM or Battery Load test machine to the battery
-Start the engine
-Alternator should produce between 13.7 - 14.7 volts

19
Q

What does CCA stand for?

A

Cold Cranking Amps

-Measures a battery’s ability to start and engine in cold climates.
