Basophils Flashcards
1
Q
what are features of Basophils?
A
- 14-16 µm
- unknown lifespan
- they migrate to injury sites and accumulate in damaged tissue
- Granules are large and basophilic which go dark blue when stained
- Bi-lobed nucleus that is usually entirely obscured by granules
2
Q
What are functions of basophils?
A
- mediates allergic and inflammatory responses
- Releases chemicals to enhance the effects initiated by mast cells
- increase blood flow
- release chemicals to attract eosinophils and other basophils
3
Q
what chemicals can basophils release to enhance the effects initiated by mast cells?
A
Histamine or Heparin
4
Q
what is histamine and what can it do?
A
histamine is a vasodilator.
It can:
- help to activate eosinophils
- help to increase local inflammation
5
Q
What is heparin and what does it do?
A
Heparin is an anticoagulant.
when inflammation occurs heparin is released to prevent coagulation, so more blood can flow to the area of concern and therefore bring more WBC to the area.
6
Q
what might a high count of basophils indicate?
A
- allergic reaction
- leukaemia
- cancer
- hypothyroidism
7
Q
what might a low count of basophils indicate?
A
- Pregnancy
- ovulation
- hyperthyroidism
