Basics: Antagonism Flashcards
What is a reversible competitive antagonist?
An antagonist that competes with the agonist for the active site, and can be surmounted by an increased concentration of the agonist
What does a reversible competitive antagonist do to an agonist curve?
Shifts it to the right but the maximal height (response) does not change
What is a irreversible competitive antagonist
An antagonist that irreversibly binds to a receptor
What changes does an irreversible competitive antagonists make to an agonist curve?
The curve does not shift horizontally but the maximal response is reduced
What is a non-competitive antagonist?
An antagonist that binds to a site that is not the active site and inhibits the activity of agonist
What is a chemical antagonist?
An antagonist that binds to the agonist itself and prevents it from producing a response
What is physiological antagonism?
Two agonists with opposite effects bind and cancel each other out
